Wild bears of Alaska 2025

Starting in Kodiak, Alaska this voyage will explore regions of Alaska impossible to reach, other than by sea plane or boat.

We may well spend a day or so in this wonderful archipelago before we cross over into true wilderness- Katmai National Park.

Here, huge landscapes dominated by mountains, glaciers and coastal features and a multitude of wildlife will surround us, this national park as is wild as it gets. This is a wilderness away from the masses and out of reach of more commercial Inside Passage cruises and vessels.

The primary aim of the trip is to spend as much time as possible with the enormous Alaskan Grizzly Bear. We will be extremely close at times and with our expert guides, will be able to spend a great deal of time in very close proximity to these bears and even cubs just a few months old. We will have a hugely experienced bear guide with us for the duration of the tour who understands bears and their behaviour like no other. Safety will be paramount at all times.

As summer turns into autumn early this far north, these bears will be foraging and fishing along the coast, putting on as much weight as possible before the arrival of winter. We will have the opportunity to photograph bears fishing and foraging and very likely fighting as we explore. In this region are some of the largest bears on the planet and being so close to wild animals of this size is a privilege very few will ever have.

Katmai National Park is also home to grey wolves which are often spotted and photographed, as well as black bears, Bald and Golden Eagles, multiple other birds of prey including owls and falcons. Moose, Caribou and red fox are also likely and if we are really lucky, encounters with Lynx, wolverine etc are possible.

Many species of whale are also likely to be spotted as we travel. Humpbacks will almost certainly be the most photogenic as they breach and put on their show. Orca and Grey whales are also likely along with a few species of dolphin.

Our home for this voyage will be the wonderful M/V Dream Catcher and she is simply perfect for exploring this region.

The Dream Catcher possesses a unique blend of comfort and functionality. Her rugged exterior is tough enough for the roughest Alaskan waters while her interior is cozy enough to make you forget you are in the last frontier. The commercial galley is capable of turning out restaurant quality food, something you’ll come to appreciate very quickly on your Alaska small boat voyage.

Though you may think of her as a yacht, she was built to handle Alaska’s extreme environment and do work as a research/charter vessel from Southeast to the Beaufort Sea. On board the Dream Catcher you encounter a vessel with over 1500 square feet of living space.

Each room provides comfortable sleeping quarters and a quiet place aboard the ship that you’ll be able to enjoy to yourself as you please. In addition to beds and storage for personal effects, the rooms come equipped with their own toilet and shower. The staterooms also come with several standard outlets for charging your camera, computer, phone, or whatever you bring that may need a charge during your trip. For your comfort there is a central forced air heating system and individual electric heaters in each room along with portholes.

Pricing is based on double occupancy rooms. Single occupancy can be arranged but the supplement for this will be 75% of the original cost extra.

Places are limited to a maximum of 12 passengers.

Please note- This tour will not be strenuous and the terrain will be easily navigable. We will at times be on our feet for long periods at a time. Daily itineraries will be kept completely flexible to react to weather, conditions and wildlife sightings.
